About Foundation Systems Engineering
Foundation Systems Engineering (FSE) provides geotechnical, environmental, and geostructural engineering services throughout the Southeast. Our Construction Special Inspections and Construction Materials Testing division is rapidly growing. We are seeking a Staff Professional / Special Inspector for projects involving concrete, soils, masonry, and steel. This is a hands-on, field-focused role based in our Johnson City, Tennessee office.
This position is a full-time role located at our Johnson City office, reporting to our Construction Special Inspections Department Manager.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform field inspections and testing of concrete, soils, masonry, and steel in accordance with project requirements
- Prepare clear, accurate daily field reports documenting observations and test results
- Communicate effectively with project managers, engineers, and contractors to resolve on-site questions
- Maintain proper records of inspections and test data
- Work safely and follow company and industry safety standards
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in construction, engineering technology, or related field preferred
- ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I certification, ICC Special Inspection certifications (Soils, Concrete, Masonry, Steel, etc.), or ability to obtain within 6 months
- Strong observation skills with attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to prepare thorough, well-written reports
- Good communication skills for interacting with engineers, technicians, and contractors
- Basic computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
Nice to Have
- Prior experience in construction inspection, testing, or related technical field
- Familiarity with ACI, ASTM, and ICC codes and standards
- ICC Master of Special Inspection (preferred or willingness to work toward it)
- OSHA 10/30-hour training
Working Conditions
- Office and field environment
- Requires walking, moderate to heavy lifting (50+ lbs.), infrequent climbing, and exposure to temperature and noise
- Must be able to work some weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed
- Periodic travel to job sites
- Must use own vehicle (truck or reliable transportation), mileage reimbursed
Requirements
- Valid state driver’s license and clean driving record
- Willingness to obtain certifications within 6 months if not already held
